Some coughs outlive their cause. When the asthma is treated, the reflux controlled, and the cough is still there, the problem may no longer be in the associated conditions but in the nerves. The lab works through three things at once: a national patient registry, the molecular and imaging work that reaches past what the registry can measure, and the question of how evidence gets read once it exists. 연구실은 세 가지를 함께 끌고 갑니다. 전국 규모의 환자 레지스트리, 레지스트리가 측정할 수 없는 곳까지 들어가는 분자·영상 연구, 그리고 만들어진 근거를 어떻게 읽을 것인가라는 질문입니다.
A multicentre, prospective observational cohort of Korean adults with chronic cough, recruited at referral allergy, pulmonology and cough clinics. It began in July 2019 with 12 centres and now runs across 23. Participants are followed for five years. 만성기침으로 알레르기내과·호흡기내과·기침 클리닉에 의뢰된 성인을 대상으로 한 다기관 전향적 관찰 코호트입니다. 2019년 7월 12개 기관으로 시작해 현재 23개 기관이 참여하고 있으며, 등록 후 5년간 추적합니다.

Understanding cough beyond the questionnaire and the counter means finding molecular and biological pathways that have not yet been named. We work through genetics, transcriptomics, brain imaging and cough sound-omics, looking for ways to see what current measures cannot reach. 지금 측정할 수 있는 것만으로는 충분하지 않습니다. 설문과 기침 횟수를 넘어 만성기침을 이해하려면 아직 이름 붙지 않은 분자·생물학적 경로를 찾아야 합니다. 유전체, 전사체, 뇌영상, 기침 음향 오믹스를 통해 지금의 측정이 닿지 못하는 곳을 보려 합니다.
Generating evidence is only half the work. Reading it correctly is what medical research rests on, and that reading is itself a research question: how evidence is appraised, how it is carried into guidelines, and how it is used in front of a patient. 근거를 만드는 일은 절반에 불과합니다. 그것을 올바르게 해석하는 일이 의학 연구의 토대이며, 해석 자체가 하나의 연구 주제입니다. 근거를 어떻게 평가하고, 어떻게 진료지침으로 옮기며, 환자 앞에서 어떻게 쓰는가.

Woo-Jung Song is Professor of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at Asan Medical Center, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, where he runs a chronic cough clinic and leads the Korean Chronic Cough Registry. Much of that work asks whether chronic cough is better understood as a disorder of airway sensation than as a symptom of something else. He was educated at Seoul National University College of Medicine, with an MD in 2002, a master's in immunology in 2007 and a doctorate in clinical pharmacology in 2017. He joined the faculty at Seoul National University Hospital in 2012 and moved to Asan Medical Center in 2018, and was an Honorary Research Fellow at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London, in 2019–2020, working with Prof. Kian Fan Chung. 울산대학교 의과대학 서울아산병원 알레르기내과 교수로, 만성기침 클리닉을 운영하며 한국 만성기침 레지스트리를 이끌고 있습니다. 그 작업의 상당 부분은 만성기침이 다른 병의 증상인지, 기도 감각 자체의 질환인지를 묻습니다. 서울대학교 의과대학에서 의학사(2002), 면역학 석사(2007), 임상약리학 박사(2017)를 마쳤습니다. 2012년부터 서울대학교병원에서 교수로 일하다 2018년 서울아산병원으로 옮겼고, 2019~2020년에는 영국 임페리얼칼리지 런던 국립심폐연구소에서 Honorary Research Fellow로 Kian Fan Chung 교수와 함께 연구했습니다.
He chairs the European Respiratory Society Task Force on chronic cough disease classification and nomenclature (TF-2025-08), and the KAAACI Task Force for the Adult Severe Asthma Biological Treatment Guidelines. He served on the ERS chronic cough guideline task force (2017–2019) and the KAAACI chronic cough guideline task force (2016–2018), and now sits on the international advisory board of ERS NEUROCOUGH CRC and the advisory group of the IMPACT Chronic Cough Centre of Research Excellence in Australia. 유럽호흡기학회(ERS) 만성기침 질병 분류·명명법 태스크포스(TF-2025-08)와 대한천식알레르기학회 성인 중증천식 생물학적 치료 지침 태스크포스의 의장을 맡고 있습니다. He is Chief Editor of ERJ Open Research and an Associate Editor of the European Respiratory Journal. He is also an Associate Editor of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research, cough section director at the Journal of Thoracic Disease, and an editorial board member of Lung and Clinical & Experimental Allergy. He co-edited the ERS Monograph on chronic cough.
